Used Car Buying Guide for Maharashtra Buyers

Buying a used car in Maharashtra is straightforward if you check the right things in the right order. Here's the checklist we walk every customer through at our Newasa showroom, based on 10+ years and 500+ cars sold.

1. Documents to verify before you pay

• Registration Certificate (RC) — confirm the chassis and engine number on the RC physically match the vehicle.
• Insurance — check validity and whether it's comprehensive or third-party only.
• PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate — must be current; renewing an expired one is quick but factor the cost in.
• Form 28/29/30 or NOC — required if the car is being transferred from outside Maharashtra.
• Loan hypothecation status — if the RC shows a financer's name (HP), get written confirmation the loan is closed before transfer.

2. Physical inspection points

• Odometer vs. wear — pedal rubber, seat fabric, and steering wheel wear should roughly match the claimed kilometres.
• Panel gaps and paint — uneven gaps or slightly different paint shade between panels can indicate accident repair.
• Engine cold start — ask to start the car cold (engine not pre-warmed); unusual noise on a cold start is more telling than a warm one.
• AC and electricals — test AC cooling, power windows, central lock, and all lights before agreeing on price.
• Test drive — always test drive on a mix of straight road and turns to check alignment and braking.

3. If the car has a CNG kit

CNG is common in Maharashtra used cars. Check whether the kit is company-fitted or after-market, ask for the CNG kit's hydro-test certificate (cylinders need periodic testing), and confirm the tank doesn't intrude too much on boot space if that matters to you.

4. Negotiating fairly

Ask for the standard market valuation range for the model, year, and kilometres — most Maharashtra dealers including us can share this. Negotiate on documented issues (a needed tyre change, an expiring PUC) rather than a flat discount request, it moves faster and is fairer to both sides.

5. After you buy

Complete the RTO ownership transfer within the required timeframe, and update your insurance policy to your name immediately — driving on the seller's insurance after transfer is a common and avoidable mistake.
